What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are prolific pests that can find their way into any home or business that provides them with their favorite food source - human blood. Bed bugs are oval, reddish-brown colored insects that are flattened from top to bottom. Bed bugs are mostly nocturnal, hiding their flat bodies during the day in tight cracks and crevices. These parasitic pests emerge at night to feed on the blood of their hosts by using their proboscis (an elongated sucking mouthpart). After feeding, bed bugs' appearance will change slightly. Their bodies swell, elongate, and turn a deep purplish-red color.
Are bed bugs dangerous?
Bed bugs are not considered dangerous pests, but bed bugs do bite humans in order to feed on our blood. While not all people react to their bites, some do after experiencing an allergic reaction to their saliva. For people who are allergic to bed bugs, their bites can be itchy and may lead to secondary infections that require medical attention. In addition, having a bed bug infestation is a stressful event and can lead to sleepless nights.
Why do I have a bed bug problem?
The most common way bed bugs are introduced into homes is accidentally when they crawl onto you or your belongings after you come into contact with them in a public place. They can also be introduced inside via used furniture, mattresses, box springs, or by migrating through walls or floors.
Where will I find bed bugs?
Bed bugs live almost exclusively with humans. They are typically found in public places where large groups of people come and go on a regular basis. Hotels, office buildings, nursing homes, schools, daycares, dormitories, hospitals, shopping centers, airports, movie theaters, and museums can all house populations of bed bugs.
Once introduced into your home, bed bugs initially infest sleeping areas. If the infestation is allowed to continue they will begin to move throughout your home. Bed bugs hide out in the cracks and crevices found in walls, floors, furniture, electronics, keyboards, in wall voids behind switch plates and outlets, or behind wooden molding.
