House Spiders

What are House Spiders?

As their name suggests, house spiders are common intruders of homes and other buildings in Memphis, TN. Like all spiders, house spiders have eight legs, two body parts (cephalothorax and abdomen), and no antennae. They also have fang-like mouthparts called chelicerae. House spiders are yellowish-brown in color with off-white colored abdomens. Their bodies and legs have dark stripes that meet at an angle and form a chevron-like pattern.

More About House Spiders

Are house spiders dangerous?

House spiders are not dangerous and are considered nuisance pests. All spiders possess venom, but non-threatening spiders like house spiders do not have venom that is strong enough to cause health problems in people. House spiders have the potential to bite but usually do so only if they are being directly threatened or squished.

Why do I have a house spider problem?

House spiders are attracted to properties that offer the things they need to live successfully. Most residential properties make a good home for spiders and offer ample food, water, and shelter sources. Things like gardens, trees, shrubs, bushes, woodpiles, and heavy vegetation can attract spiders and allow them to thrive. House spiders commonly find their way inside homes and other structures like garages, barns, and sheds while following their food sources. They also move inside if the weather outside becomes too hot, dry, or wet. House spiders tend to move inside through spaces in exterior walls, foundations, or through spaces around windows and doors.

Where will I find house spiders?

House spiders and spiders, in general, are shy and reclusive. They prefer to take up residence in places that are quiet, dark, and secluded. Outside they create webs or burrows in gardens, shrubs, overgrown vegetation, tall grasses, in rock piles, wood piles, and underneath decks and porches. House spiders that have moved inside like to nest in corners of closets, in basements, in crawlspaces, in attics, behind wall voids, and under sinks. They will build and then abandon their unsightly webs throughout a structure they have invaded while searching for prey.
