More About Mosquitoes
More About Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are a serious problem in Memphis, Tennessee. With the warm and humid climate of the region, mosquitoes breed quickly and can spread diseases such as West Nile Virus, Zika virus, malaria, and chikungunya. In addition to posing health risks to humans, they also cause significant damage to crops. Mosquitoes have become an increasing nuisance in Memphis over the past few years due to a variety of factors including population growth and changes in land use patterns.
To combat this growing issue, local officials have put forth several initiatives designed to reduce mosquito populations and protect public health. These efforts include increased surveillance for mosquito-borne illnesses as well as educational campaigns that raise awareness about proper measures for preventing bites from mosquitoes.
Appearance
Mosquitoes come in a variety of sizes depending on the species but generally measure between 3mm to 9mm long with slender bodies that are greyish brown in color with white markings. The most distinguishing feature of a mosquito is its proboscis which they use to feed on blood meals.
Behavior
Adult female mosquitoes feed on nectar as well as blood while male mosquitoes mainly feed on plant nectar only. Female mosquitoes need regular blood meals for protein production when laying eggs while males do not bite humans at all since they don’t need any kind of nutrition other than what they get from plants. Mosquitoes tend to be more active during dawn and dusk hours but some species may also be active during daytime hours if conditions allow them to do so.
Where They Frequent
Mosquitoes can be found in many areas around the Memphis area such as wetlands, marshes, ponds, and swamps. They also tend to frequent areas of standing water where they lay eggs which are then hatched into larvae. Mosquitoes can also be found in shady or damp areas such as near trees and bushes where they rest during the daytime hours. Mosquitoes are particularly active around these areas after rainfall.
Our Memphis Mosquito Treatment Plan
Mosquitoes are one of the most pervasive pests in outdoor areas, and they can be difficult to completely eradicate from a property. However, with an effective mosquito treatment plan, it is possible to dramatically reduce their activity and keep them under control. Our team at Mid-South Pest & Termite has developed a comprehensive approach that combines targeted treatments with ongoing monitoring for maximum effectiveness.
Some of the steps we take to treat mosquitoes include:
- An initial inspection of the property to identify mosquito breeding sites
- Sealing and treating entry points, such as cracks around windows and doors
- Treating areas where mosquitoes tend to congregate with insecticides
- Installing physical barriers like screens on windows, doors, and vents
- Setting up traps to capture adult mosquitoes in high-traffic areas
- Applying larvicides in standing water sources that are prone to mosquito larvae growth
- Monitoring for continued activity after treatments have been completed
