Wasps

A Guide To Wasp Identification & Control

What are wasps?

Wasps are a type of stinging insects, and they are usually categorized as either social or solitary. Social wasps live in large colonies with numbers in the thousands, while solitary wasps nest on their own. Many species of wasps are predatory and feed on species of nuisance insects, while some feed on pollen and nectar and are responsible for some pollination. Most species of wasps have a pinched waist, two pair of wings, and six legs that hang down while in flight. Wasps tend to have little to no body hair.

More About Wasps

Are wasps dangerous?

Wasps have the potential to be a significant danger to people. Their stings are quite painful, and their venom is powerful enough to cause serious health problems in people like trigger allergic reactions and even anaphylaxis, requiring immediate medical attention. Many species of wasps have smooth stingers, which means they can sting their victims repeatedly, increasing the amount of venom they are able to inject.

Why do I have a wasp problem?

Wasps are attracted to any properties that offer ample food, water, and nesting sites. Wasps, depending on the species, feed on insects, proteins, nectar, sweets, and honeydew. Some are scavengers and forage for food around trash cans and outdoor eating areas. Properties with open garbage cans, compost piles, grills, gardens, flowering vegetation, clogged gutters, bird baths, or ponds attract a variety of stinging insects.

Where will I find wasps?

Wasps build their nests in a variety of locations that provide protection and shelter, either above or on the ground. Aerial nesters build their nests in trees, shrubs, utility poles, porches, or underneath rooflines, decks, and door frames. Ground nesters usually create nests in the abandoned ground holes of small animals, under woodpiles, or underneath shrubs or bushes. If they find their way inside homes or other buildings, wasps can be found building nests inside the chimney, in attics, behind exterior walls, or inside crawlspaces.
